Simplicity

Meditation_snowdrop_6573There’s nothing really all that fancy about a snowdrop; just two colors (white and green) and three petals and yet it manages to be utterly elegant. If you reduced your life to this level of simplicity, what would it look like?

True beauty has strength

Meditation_beauty_1650There is something compelling in this flower, although I doubt you’d call it pretty.  Feel the thick texture and the symmetry of each petal yielding the next.  It is beautiful because of the very things that keep it from being pretty.  Are you trimming down the very things that make you beautiful in an attempt to be conventional and “pretty”?

Frivolity

On close inspection there is something delightfully silly and frivolous about witch hazel blossoms – the bright curling petals going every which way.  If Mother Nature can let her hair down and be seen in public like this, what’s stopping you?

What colors make you smile?  When was the last time you wore that color? If you’re answer goes back farther than a few days, take a few minutes to re-examine your rules…

The last time you saw something beautiful did you allow yourself to sit and just appreciate it?  Or like most of us did you make a mental note (or take a picture) and keep moving? If you find this image at all appealing let it absorb into you; make beauty intake an active task for the day.

Feeling connected

Meditation_leaf_6479

There are times when feeling connected to the natural world is as (or more) important than feeling connected to other people.  Take a minute and just absorbed the power of the vein structure in these leaves; the same basic structure and purpose as the blood vessels that keep you going.  Now, do you feel less alone?

Do you stop yourself from exploring things of interest when they appear to be dead ends? When you know you’ll have to retrace your steps?

Segments that make up the whole

bamboo meditation

A bamboo grove perfectly illustrates how something big is really made up of small pieces. The sections of stalk, the leaves are unremarkable by themselves and yet essential. Can you see the parts of your life that correspond? Is the sunlight filtering all the way through?

Just out of reach

Too often we think we can’t accomplish something grand like what we hear on the news because we can’t see that it began as something much more simple. Every great novel or movie script or mechanical invention because with something simple like a sentence that probably isn’t even part of the finished product. Have you made a start?

There are all kinds of ways to stand out

Meditation_camellia_d468

Taken in pieces there really isn’t anything that outstanding about this camellia flower – it’s doesn’t have an unusual color or shape or even number of petals.  It’s not particularly small or really gigantic and yet somehow it commands attention. Do you view yourself in terms of the pieces or the overall?
